There have been a lot of changes on the web since I wrote the first edition of “Power Linking Your Way to 1 Million Hits” in 2002. Back then I told everyone that the only thing that will never change, despite search engine shake-ups and search technology improvements, is that links will always be the most important part of any website promotion campaign.

In fact, the people best able to withstand major changes and shifts in the search engines that affect their rankings are the people who have a broad, multi-faceted marketing campaign.

In order to weather any drops from single-sources of traffic to your site, you must have a lot of irons in the fire (links). People you have targeted as your best prospects should be able to find your site virtually everywhere they surf.

Web site owners who rely solely on search engine ranking are leaving 90% of the marketing pie on the plate! For long-term stability and steady, predictable traffic, you simply must broaden your reach and utilize a host of different publicity tactics in order to keep sales up.

One of the most effective tactics I talk about is article publishing. It is also one of the most misunderstood and abused tactics I teach. If you don’t get it, don’t do it. Below is my explanation of why we write articles and other short publications in the first place.

Publishing and Syndication of Your Articles

A lot of people miss the boat on this one. And it’s too bad that many people see that articles and other published works are important, but they don’t produce quality work, therefore their work doesn’t get picked up by big web sites and newsletter owners.

You see, most people focus on article publishing as a way to get a link published to their site. (Solely for search engines to find) Problem is, once they have syndicated their article to tons of free content sites, all they have at the end of the day is a link pointing to their site.

No one is READING the articles! Why? Because, honestly, they are terrible. Or they are just short of being blatant ads. People pick up on an amateur article within the first sentence or two and move on. Didn’t you write your article to get traffic?

Produce shoddy work and there is no click on the link. There is no traffic produced. The webmasters who focus totally on getting links as a tool to increase their pagerank in Google are missing the point entirely.

The point of Power Linking and all the tactics in the system was never to get high search engine rankings. Getting ranked well in the search engines was and still is a BY-PRODUCT of a properly executed Power Linking campaign.

When I talk to my clients about getting links, what I am talking about is getting links placed in places where human beings will see them and click on them. Not just link directories which are created solely for boosting link popularity with Google.

So when you publish an article, take the time to think about what people in your market need or want to know and give it to them. And write a GOOD article!

Linking is not just something that looks like this: www.power-linking-profits.com. Real linking is networking and making connections with future customers on an emotional level through your publicity pieces.

Linking is about respect. You gain respect by being published and being seen as the expert in your field. And it goes without saying that your published work needs to stand up to basic quality expectations of savvy readers in your target market.

Come off looking like a hack who is only interested in getting a link published at the end of their cruddy article, and you lose all respect. So even if someone does click on your link, they have reservations about you right off the bat before they even get to your site. This is no way to sell products and services.

If you remember nothing else, please remember this: No matter what linking method you work on this week, keep in mind that the most important links of all are the links intended for real people to see and click on!

Get linked in content directories and on web pages that get hit by as many of your target prospects as possible. And link to get traffic, not search engine rankings!

People focus too much on search engine marketing. If you do your job as a marketer, you will naturally rank high in the search engines. There is no need whatsoever to focus your marketing campaign on search engines entirely.

Focus your marketing efforts on people, your customers, and you will have what I call “Natural Search Engine Rankings.” You see, Google wants the most relevant results. That’s where their bread is buttered. Well, what I have been trying teach thousands of customers all this time is that you need to focus your marketing campaign on your customers so that you are the MOST relevant site on the net in your market.

Don’t worry about Google. They WANT you to be #1 if you deserve to be. How to be #1? By marketing to your customers directly on sites they surf the most and being the natural relevant result in their search.

Good search engine rankings will follow a great marketing campaign. By the time you get your #1 position on Yahoo though, you should have so much traffic and sales because of a properly implemented marketing campaign that you hardly notice you finally made it!

That’s the REAL power of linking.

Two Spanish students from Rovira i Virgili University, Isaac Paton and Florencia Manette, opened the 15th of March La Pagina del Millon, a web page through which they hope to pay their university degree expenses

After Alex Tew’s success with “Themilliondollarhomepage”, only a few months ago, now two young Spanish students try to do the same with www.lapaginadelmillon.es.

The page is structured with 10.000 squares of 100 pixels each, at the rate of 1 euro per pixel. People interested in appearing in the page buy the pixels to insert the image which links to their own web pages. This is a way to increase the number of visitors; in the page is showed the comments from the buyers’ satisfaction about the great number of visitors they have with only 100 pixels they bought in La Pagina del Millon.

One of the differences from the English project is that this one is addressed to the Spanish Community.

After three months’ experience, the young university students have collected 20.000 euros, they have been in radio and TV interviews, in pieces of news in the Spanish news papers and also in pieces of news on line.
Other differences from other similar projects are that www.lapaginadelmillon.es offers a serious service and it is shown on the first places in internet search (Google, MSN).

In order to bring out the project in a legal and serious way, the two young university students have established a firm. This implies a supervision of all the terms provided by lawyers. Moreover, an important Spanish Bank gives support to guarantee the safety and privacy to pay on line.

This may come as a shock to you, but we all have rocks in our heads. Actually the “rocks,” tiny crystals of calcium carbonate, are deep inside our ears and help us to sense and respond to motion. Sometimes the crystals (called otoconia) shake loose and float to other parts of the inner ear. The result is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and it’s awful.

I know because it happened to me. My BPPV is the result of an accidental blow to my jaw bone. It wasn’t a big blow, just enough to shake up things. Within an hour I was feeling dizzy. Eight hours later I was lying in bed and moaning. My entire world was out of whack.

The bed felt like it was spinning and the room felt like it was spinning, too. I was so dizzy I couldn’t take a step, let alone walk. In addition to these symptoms I had bouts of sweating, followed by bouts of chills. Light bothered my eyes and I tried covering them with a blanket, but the blanket made my vertigo worse so I uncovered them again. Constant nausea was the worst symptom and I thought I would throw up at any minute.

Mayo Clinic lists symptoms of BPPV on its Website, http://www.MayoClinic.com, and I had most of them: dizziness, vertigo, lightheadedness, unsteadiness, loss of balance, and nausea. Blurred vision after quick movements was the only symptom I didn’t have have. Health experts describe BPPV as a “balance and dizziness disorder,” a “bothersome” and “temporary” condition. These words don’t tell the real story.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is debilitating. I’ve had it several times and it knocks me flat.

Because I’m a health care journalist I decided to learn more about BPPV and looked it up on the Internet, using the words “canalith repositioning maneuver.” More than 1,450 references popped up and the most comprehensive is by Timothy C. Hain, MD, “Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.” Reading it was like reading my own case history.

According to Hain, head injury is the most common cause of BPPV in people under 50 years of age. This statistic includes kids. “About 50% of all dizziness is due to BPPV,” Hain goes on to explain. Rolling over in bed and getting out of bed can cause BPPV, Hain says, and it can return after a visit to the beauty shop or dentist - things that also happened to me.

What can you do about BPPV? If you have a mild case you can wait it out and hope the “ear rocks” go back to their original place or dissolve naturally. And if you wait it out Hain recommends using two pillows at night, not sleeping on your “bad” side, getting up slowly, and sitting on the edge of the bed a few minutes before walking.

Your other options are office treatment, home treatment, and in severe cases, surgical treatment. Fortunately, my husband is a physician and knew what to do. He helped me with the Canalith Repositioning Procedure, described by John M. Epley, MD in 1992. Only a trained professional should perform this procedure, according to The Vestibular Disorders Assocciation.

Scary as it may sound, the procedure is quite simple and Mayo Clinic has posted a slide presentation about it on its Website, http://www.MayoClinic.com. As Mayo Clinic explains, the goal of the procedure is “to move particles from the fluid-filled simicircular chambers of your inner ear to a tiny bag-like structure (utricle) where these particles don’t cause trouble.”

During the procedure your physician watches your eyes closely. The movement of your eyes tells him or her which ear has the loose crystals.

After the procedure you must sit up for 48 hours. If you lie flat while you’re sleeping the procedure has to be repeated and you go back to square on on time. Even if you do it right the Canalith Repositioning Procedure may have to be repeated. The Vestibular Disorders Association describes the procedure as “very effective, with an approximate cure rate of 80%.”

The procedure helps me, but it isn’t a quick fix, and I usually repeat it. At night I sleep on the couch, with pillows behind my back to prop me up and a small pillow at my neck to hold it in a vertical position. Your doctor may recommend a neck collar to hold your neck in place.

Trained health professionas may perform other procedures to ease your BPPV. Again, The Vestibular Disorders Association says these procedures “must only be performed by a professional who is trained in the maneuvers and safeguard against possible neck or back injury . . . .”

Have you had sudden dizziness or vertigo? Don’t ignore these symptoms and get a checkup now. Your physician will conduct and/or order tests to rule out detaching retina, esophageal reflex, brain tumor, and other diseases. Watch for symptoms of BPPV if your child is hit in the head.

Having BPPV has made me appreciate things I used to take for granted, like keeping my balance and walking straight. I’m amazed by the spiral design of the ear and its “ear rocks.” Yes, I have rocks in my head an I’m glad of it!

Do NOT squeeze or “pop” skin blemishes. This can cause permanent scaring and the appearance of dark splotches, on the skin. (Not something you want have for the rest of your life.)

Men who have acne should use care when shaving. Either an electric or safety razor can be used. Those who choose a safety razor should always use a sharp blade and soften their beard with soap and water, before applying shaving cream.

It won’t happen overnight, but as long as you are consistent, you will start to see an improvement. If you have acne, proper skin care is the first step to controlling the problem.
